It's a New Year and it's time to start kicking new ideas around. It's finally time to start bringing good ideas to life. The Seagull 60 and 30 are refined designs based on the Seagull 75. The 75 was a basic wind turbine that taught the geometry and function but didn't perform that well due to not enough magnets and too much resistance. The new design is optimized with performance in mind. The blae profiles are now the best profile and geometry for performance.
Projects that would be fun are the Aeolus Racer, the 2 HP steam generator, and a large wind turbine design that can power a home. Always a lot to do.

Shipping to the US only3/25/2014
For over a year we have shipped worldwide, to every continent. It is expensive, time consuming and more and more difficult. Some countries charge as much as 33% duty for goods. Some parcels never make it due to being intercepted.
In good faith Lynx Wind has refunded for lost or stolen parcels, and has yet to collect on insurance from shippers.
To maintain a good business we will no longer ship outside the US.
Lynx Wind will turn its efforts towards completing the updated Seagull DIY and the next model of Gulls.

It's been a long cold winter and I get cabin fever. So I resurrected an old hobby - simple radio controlled planes. I am all thumbs when it comes to Radio Control. I can handle about one thought at a time so these planes are Old Timer designs intended for free flight, but with rudder and throttle.
They fly themselves if you leave them alone. But to avoid flying off you control the throttle and rudder.
This isn't so much a commerce site as a fun hobby site. All the plans are free to download. All the planes accept the 1System pod that I designed. Just plug in the rudder servo and attach the pod with a rubber band to switch from one plane to another.
All the planes build from 1 sheet of Dollar Tree foam board, yes $1.
You can add elevator, and ailerons, but see how much you can do with rudder only first.
All the planes are about 6 oz. 30" span and will fit your budget (under $5) and fit your car. These are very easy to build in 1-2 hours with simple tools and are fun to decorate.
They will taxi, and take off from the ground and are very crash resistant (experience).
This site was designed for beginners by a beginner (an experienced beginner). I probably always will be a beginner, but that's Ok, because I don't need the stress of 30 Lbs of nitro powered machinery buzzing around property and loved ones.
All these planes will fly by themselves, slowly. Short blips of rudder will keep them from flying off.

Not many businesses start up and see a profit the first year. 2013 was a profitable year. This year is starting strong with brisk sales in the first week. What is remarkable too, is that this is the renewable energy business where most businesses need Government subsidies and strings pulled, and still fail.
Lynx Wind has no such help from Government and is completely self funded and stands on its own.
Wind Turbines, electronics, parts and plans have been sold all over the World and the US. Australia, Belgium, Portugal, Denmark, Norway, Hawaii, Philipines, South Korea, Puerto Rico, Texas, Wyoming......and more.
A new Turbine model will emerge in 2014. Same design but with more precision parts and a drop in costs.
The Gull 40 requires as much time and almost the same materials as the bigger Gull 160 and may be dropped in favor of a new larger 300 watt model.
The LJL-SC will get an upgrade once more, and the Seagull 75 plans will get an update based on many experimenters finding better materials and methods.
The forum is active with daily and sometimes hourly conversations about steam, wind, electronics, and off-grid living. Lots of pride and enthusiasm here at LYNX Wind. Thank you so much for making this a success.

Thank you for your patience with the lag between the LJL and this new version. It's taken me awhile longer to figure out how to reduce the price, increase performance and lower the shipping cost.
A lot of the cost was in labor to put these together. This new single wound coil helps drop the time.
Then figuring out how to package for a wall mount unit or for those wanting to house in a solar panel took some time.
At the last minute I started toying with a low cost snap-on ferrite core to boost performance.
It does boost performance noticeably. Last night I was running two 6 watt Ecosmart bulbs brightly with 4 watts total. Finally this little device is living up to its promise.
I was also able to run a 9 watt CFL on 8.4 watts which is a first. The Cree LED bulb will light now but not well.
Another goal was to make this tuneable by the user. So the coil has an extra length of wire for you to experiment with. It's easy to put a few more turns primary on and watch amps drop. Or add some turns and watch brightness increase. And you can tune for the bulb and number of bulbs. Fun stuff!
This new LJL-SC (lynx joule lamp - single coil) will fit in a flat rate USPS box for $5.85 to the 48 states. So in all the cost of the unit is down by 1/2 and the shipping by half and performance is up by 50%. Not bad for Yankee ingenuity!
16 Comments Simple School Project Wind Turbine8/30/2013
In designing the Aeolus Racer model, I developed a very simple turbine that powered the model racer. It was surprising just how much power the little turbine could make. Made from poster paper, foam board and bamboo sticks it is a very simple little project.
The actual racer was too complicated for most people, but the turbine itself was very simple.
I will develop plans for this as a school project or weekend family fun project.
All that is needed is some common craft supplies and a small DC toy motor.
It will teach the basics of the LYNX Wind turbine "hands on" and students can start to explore the reasons it works and take measurements of voltage in different wind speeds.
Just like the Seagull 75, these plans can be scaled up to a larger size.
0 Comments Converting a LawnMower Engine to Steam8/6/2013
I was asked today about converting a Lawn Mower engine to steam. I forgot about this, that I used to sell these plans when I used to have a website called LynxSteamEngines.com
It is fairly simple if you have mechanical skills and don't mind getting dirty.
The advantage of converting the 4 stroke engine is that you can build an efficient UniFlow engine with low steam usage and also have auxillary exhaust. That helps prevent compression and allows for a water slug mishap which will happen. If water gets in the cylinder at high rpms there is no where for it to go and things break. The exhaust valve in this case allows for that if it should happen.
The best candidate engine is the Briggs and Stratton 3-5 hp. The overhead cam types can be done but require a bit more work.
These engines work nicely with the oil ring removed, and you can run lubricant in the crankcase and it wont hurt anything. My engine still runs after 10 years. Will run on 10 psi, but really is better at 40-100 psi to do work. This is about a 1/4 Hp engine and will turn a small alternator.
The plans are now on the products page for $10. There are 17 pages, and it includes details on an automatic oiler.

I was asked what's going on with the engine. I would love to brag and show what we are working on, but I can't.
There are two engines in parallel development. One is very close to being a finalized design, the other is still waiting on machining for an initial review. Much of the design and materials are quite exotic.
We have 120 customers pounding on our door for a 500 HP version.
This first engine will be closer to 50 hp. It should be scalable without any major design changes. And it should actually be more efficient in a larger size.

Making progress on a new type of heat engine. Similar to a Stirling cycle but without the displacer. Similar to a Steam engine without the boiler and complicated temperature and pressure controls. Similar to a Thermal Acoustic engine but with a tight fitting ringed piston.
Will it work? We will find out soon. All that remains is the cylinder and connecting rod.
2" stroke x 2.375" bore.
What's the big deal in this modern era of WiFi, super computers, Google glasses....As of now there is no efficient way to convert mass amounts of low grade waste heat to electricity. Low grade heat like solar radiation, geothermal heat, and wasted heat from manufacturing processes.
If this engine works it can convert heat to rotary motion. That heat can also come from any fuel burned as clean as a household stove. Imagine running a quiet clean engine indoors.
Noisy internal combustion engines need liquid fuels, and those fuels don't burn complete or clean in the presence of lubricating oils.
This engine has no valve gear in the traditional sense. Just a piston and crankshaft.

5 Comments Lynx Wind - Grid Tie Inverter Limiter5/4/2013
If any of you have ever tried hooking up a wind turbine to a Grid Tie Inverter to lower your electric bill, you will know how frustrating it is. You would think by now a system would have been developed to make this happen.
The problem is more difficult than you would think. Wind power is crazy because the fluctuations in power output are extreme. Trying to design electronics for craziness is sort of antithetical.
This circuit to the left is about my 10th try at putting something between a wind turbine and a grid tie inverter, and it seems to work.
There are a few details not addressed here. One is that the grid tie inverter will use power even when it isn't putting watts back to the grid so there needs to be an off situation when input power is too low. The other missing detail is having a way to prevent over voltage. A good controller will do this.
